Dryland Training

For Summer 2010, the Nordic Racers Ski Club is offering dryland training from July 13 to September 7, Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.

For those who have never tried it, “dryland training” is simply training in the off-season. It combines many elements, including strength, endurance, balance, and ski-specific activities. It’s the perfect way to get in shape for the ski season, and is ideal for developing or maintaining general fitness (the perfect complement to a weekend hike or bike ride).

Dryland sessions include running, intervals, hill climbs, plyometrics (jump training) and exercises to increase strength and balance. Workouts are self-paced and can be tailored to your own fitness level. You don’t have to be super-fit (you should be able to run at least 3 km comfortably), and no equipment is needed except for ski poles (downhill-length poles are best).

This summer, sessions will be led by Jamie Stirling (NCCP 3, CANSI 3, CCC Official 2). And we’re throwing in something different – if you are new to this type of training, or want to ease into it slowly, lower-intensity sessions will be offered by Jules Stirling (NCCP 1, CCC Official 1 and BCRPA Certified Fitness Leader).

When & Where

Program runs from July 13th to September 7th, Tuesdays and Thursday nights from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.

Tuesday nights we will meet at the Running Room at Denman and Georgia downtown. Thursday nights meet at Cleveland Dam on the North Shore.

How Much

The cost for the twice a week (full) program is only $170, and the once a week (half) program is $100. Since this is a planned progressive program, there are no drop ins and no one-month option.

Program requires a minimum of 10 participants. You must be a member of the Nordic Racers.

Fall Dryland Training

Sunday dryland training will start again in October 2010.

In the meantime, have a look at our training videos webpage to see some of the exercises we do, and try them out yourself!

Cariboo Ski Trip

At 50 km, the Cariboo Marathon is one of the longest classic-technique loppets in B.C. (but there are 20 and 30 km options for those who don’t wish to ski as far). Afterwards, the 100 Mile Nordics always put on a great awards ceremony and dance.

Nickel Plate Loppet

We often go to the Nickel Plate Loppet, a classic loppet held at the Nickel Plate Nordic Centre near Penticton.

Kneale Quayle took lots of photos at the 2009 loppet; click the slideshow icon in the top right for a 6-minute show.

Nordic Racers regularly participate in the Vancouver Island Loppet, and Tim Penney has lots of photos: from 2008 and from 2009.

Silver Star Trip

This is our largest and most popular trip, and is held yearly at the end of November / beginning of December. For those of you who have never been to Silver Star, this is the don’t-miss event of the season, with shared accommodation in deluxe on-mountain chalets, and instruction with world-class coaches at our Ski Camp.

Thanks to Brian Hardie for compiling photo albums of our 2006, 2007, and 2008 Silver Star trips. Pictures are courtesy of Gerry, Tania, Georgia, Terry, Paul & Helen, Brian and Julia.

Wine & Cheese

Our annual kick-off to the season, the Wine and Cheese, is an opportunity to meet new friends and get reacquainted with old ones. It’s held in October, so your next chance to meet us is at dryland training or on the snow.

Hollyburn Hot Chocolate

During the ski season, Nordic Racers members can get a free hot chocolate at Hollyburn Lodge every Wednesday night.

For 2008’s last hot chocolate night, we held a scavenger hunt on skis. See photos from the hunt, courtesy of Laurence Vellard.

Annual General Meeting

Our 2010 AGM was held in July; Jamie Stirling gave a talk on his experience as an athlete guide during the Paralympic Games, and we elected a new executive.

Many thanks to Bob Brough, Feng Chen and Terry Meyer for their contributions to the past executive.

Nordic Racer Cup

What's the Nordic Racer Cup?

It's a fun classic-technique team sprint race that was last held next to Manning Park Lodge in conjunction with our Manning Park Bus Trip on February 18th, 2007.

What's a team sprint?

Teams of two ski an almost-2 km loop a total of six times (i.e., three times per skier), with each skier racing alternate laps.

Our race notice has more information.

2006's race results are available, as are a few pictures. No results for 2007, but there are some photos.

Club Race

[Holly Burn logo] Did you know that the XC ski races in 2010 will be (1) traditional relay, (2) sprints, (3) sprint relay, (4) continuous pursuit, (5) mass start and (6) individual start? If you are like most skiers, you haven't even heard of some of these formats.

Well, we aim to change all that. Over the next few years we want to give everybody the opportunity to experience these formats.

We won’t be holding a Holly Burn race in 2009; as we approach the 2010 Winter Olympics, more races will be held in the Callaghan Valley, the site for Olympic nordic events.

The 2006 edition of the Holly Burn was a Le Mans-start skiathlon, a type of continuous pursuit. Race results are available: categorized in separate files from Zone4, or as a single PDF file. Pictures are on their own webpage.

2004's Holly Burn was a sprint race; results are available: for the seeding time trials and the final heats. Pictures are on their own webpage.

2002's race results are also available, as is as a selection of pictures taken during that race.

Cascade Cup

Unfortunately, the 2009 Cascade Cup Spring Classic, originally scheduled for Saturday, March 7, 2009 at Manning Park Resort, has had to be cancelled. Thanks for your past support of the race, and we hope to see you again soon.

Past race results are available for 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008. We also have some 2008 photos.
