Nordic Racers Junior Nordics Program 2009–2010

Ski for fun! Race to win!

Junior Nordics is for young skiers who want to pursue their athletic dreams on skis. Whether it’s technical skill development, fitness, leadership, or competition, Junior Nordics offers a fun-filled program with top-level coaching and support.

With a strong core of highly-qualified coaches, we offer a program for competitive 13–17 year olds. (10–12 year old skiers should see our “Junior Juniors” program instead.)

Participants train together on Wednesday evenings (6:30–8 p.m.) and Sunday mornings (9:30–11:30 a.m.) at Cypress cross-country ski area.

Fun comes first

[Future Junior Coach] Junior Nordics emphasizes fun and quality coaching consistent with the skier’s age and development. Our philosophy is “ski for fun”, and if you’re going to race...“race to win”.

Junior Nordics is based on an internationally-recognized approach that gives junior skiers the opportunity to excel. All program coaches are former racers and/or certified with the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) or the Canadian Association of Nordic Ski Instructors (CANSI).

Program Fees

$200, not including Nordic Racers club membership fee. Sign up online.

Coaching is done by volunteers. Fees go to out-of-pocket expenses for coaches, such as gas, as well as for wax boxes, equipment, supplies, and a wind-up dinner for the juniors. There will be additional costs for bus trips and out-of-town races.

Trail Fees

Cypress Mountain is a commercial ski area and you will need a season pass or trail ticket for each session. You are responsible for purchasing a trail pass of some kind for each program day or night. This is in addition to the program fee. Tickets and season’s passes must be purchased directly from Cypress Mountain.

Ski Gear

You should have skis, boots and poles for both skating and classic techniques.

Waxing Skills

Waxing clinics will be put on specifically for parents and juniors with a keen interest in waxing. Nothing makes skiing more enjoyable than skis that glide.

Special Message for Parents

The coaches, leaders and helpers in the Junior Nordics Program appreciate that you are trusting us with your children. We will certainly do our best to live up to that trust. Although we have excellent coaches, they can’t run the program without you. You may not be a brilliant skier or budding coach, but you are a caring parent, and we need those more than we need brilliant skiers. Here are some of the ways you can contribute to the success of the program and help ensure that your child gets good value for the time and effort invested.

Please come out with your children — the coaches would like to meet you too.

Equipment: This doesn’t have to be top of the line, but it should be the right size — boots, poles and skis for the appropriate technique. Coaches can offer practical advice on how to choose equipment and resist sales pitches.

Timeliness: We have regular training sessions on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings. Everybody will benefit if your children’s skis are waxed up and ready to go on time.

Volunteer: You can help out at a scheduled race or one of the other activities during the season. Talk to the coach and Program Director Tony Chin, for more details.

“Junior Juniors”

Are you 10–12 years old?

We’ll be conducting a “Junior Juniors” program, with Tian Fowler leading the Thursday night sessions (6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.) and Pippa Rowcliffe leading the Sunday morning sessions (9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.).

Cost is $100, not including Nordic Racers club membership fee. Sign up online, or contact Tony (see below) for more info.
