Learn to Loppet Skate / Classic

Who is it For?

This program is similar to the Nordic Racers Learn to Loppet course held in past years.

It is geared to the skier who wants to develop the technical and mental skills to perform well at a loppet race.

The program is intended for a wide range of skiers at various fitness and technique levels. It is suitable for beginner racers (i.e., those just getting into racing) but the program is not suitable for the beginner skier.

When

Two separate courses will be offered, one for classic technique and another for skating. They will run at separate times to accommodate those who may wish to take both programs.

Learn to Loppet Classic and Learn to Loppet Skate will both be held in January.

Each course will run for four Monday evenings in a row (L2L Classic) or four Wednesday evenings in a row (L2L Skate) from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. To maximize class time, the class will start skiing at exactly 6:30 p.m. Students are expected to be waxed and ready to ski at that time.

Where

Meet at the Brown Bag Room, located in one of the trailers at the entrance to the Hollyburn trails.

Course Structure

The duration of the class will be spent on snow. With the compressed schedule this year, we have eliminated the guest speakers at the start of the evening, to allow the same amount of on-snow instruction and ski time.

The coach to student ratio will be 1:8 and the groups will be separated by skiing ability.

The lesson plans for the four sessions will be set prior to the start of the course so that:

  • students are aware of what items will be covered each night.
  • students can see the progression of the classes.
  • different coaches within the same course will know exactly where the class is at and what information needs to be covered on a given night.

Cost

$100 per course for club members only, if you sign up by the early-bird deadline of December 25, 2009. If you sign up after Christmas, the price goes up by $20.

The Learn to Loppet Skate / Classic registration fee covers the cost of coaching and does not include trail tickets, transportation, or loppet registration.

Wrap-up Loppet

Both the classic and the skate courses will conclude with participation in a loppet.

The coach will attend the loppet and assist the students with pre-race preparation, support during the race and post-race analysis. In order to fully support the students the coach will attend the loppet as a coach and not as a competitor.

Learn to Loppet Advanced Skate / Classic

Who is it For?

This program is designed for the skier who has completed at least one Nordic Racer Learn to Loppet course in past years and has taken part in several loppets.

The course will work on fine-tuning technique with a focus on race-specific skills such as terrain transitions and downhill technique. This class will have a high energy pace and will put on lots of kilometres. Students are expected to have a good fitness level and good basic technique.

When

Two separate courses will be offered, one for classic technique and another for skating. They will run at separate times to accommodate those who may wish to take both programs.

Learn to Loppet Advanced Classic and Learn to Loppet Advanced Skate will both be held in January.

Each course will run for three Monday evenings in a row (L2L Advanced Classic) or three Wednesday evenings in a row (L2L Advanced Skate) from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and one full day afterwards at Callaghan Valley or Manning Park. To maximize class time, the weeknight classes will start skiing at exactly 6:30 p.m.

The coach to student ratio will be 1:6.

The lesson plans for the three evening sessions and the full day session will be set prior to the start of the course so that:

  • students are aware of what items will be covered each session.
  • students can see the progression of the classes.

The same coach will work with the group over the four sessions.

The full day session will focus on putting all the skills together to excel in a loppet race. Video analysis will be a key component of the full day session. The class will choose the location and date of the day trip as a group at the beginning of the course.

Cost

$100 per course for club members only, if you sign up by the early-bird deadline of December 25, 2009. If you sign up after Christmas, the price goes up by $20.

The Learn to Loppet Advanced registration fee covers the cost of coaching and does not include trail tickets or transportation for the sessions.
